"The Postal Service is proud to introduce these new Mariachi stamps to celebrate the exuberant sound of this music, which is an integral part of MexicAn-American culture and has fans around the world," Peter Pastre, vice president of government relations and public policy for the Postal Service, said the president, who served as the dedication officer for the stamp ceremony.
"The sounds of mariachi bands filled the air today as singers infused stories of life and love as well as energetic dances into the music as this celebration continues to use these 18 million stamps now on sale at post offices across the United States," he said.
Other participants at the sealing ceremony were Monica Trujillo, director of education and arts sessions for the Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque; Brian O'Connell, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer of Atrisco Cos.; And Amelia Garcia, assistant principal at Ysleta High School in El Paso, Texas.
Rafael Lopez designed stamps and created artwork. Derry Noyes is the artistic director.
Each of the five new stamps in each edition of 20 features a musician, dressed in the traditional garb of a mariachi performer, playing one of the five iconic mariachi instruments: the guitar, guitarron, vihuela, violin and trumpet. The geometric shapes in the background of each stamp are a nod to the Mexican villages where mariachi music originated.
